Pupils think inside the box!

Hard at work: Aberdeenshire Ranger David Brown helps Tarves Rotakids to assemble the birdboxesHard at work: Aberdeenshire Ranger David Brown helps Tarves Rotakids to assemble the birdboxes

PUPILS are often encouraged these days to ‘think outside the box’. However, a group of pupils from Tarves Primary School have decided to turn their intention to what goes inside as well, by helping to build a number of bird boxes for Haddo Country Park.

The pupils, who are all members of Rotakids, were helped by Aberdeenshire Ranger David Brown to assemble the flat pack bird boxes.

The boxes, which have different styled entrance holes, are made from wood from Wood Recyclability in Pitmedden, and were donated by Bob Davis of the Ellon Biodiversity Action Group (EBAG). Once finished, they are being given to the Friends of Haddo Country Park and will be put in the Discovery Area that the Friends are creating.

Amidst the general banging and clatter of nails going into wood, class teacher Susan Keith said that the task was one which had helped to teach pupils the importance of co-operation and sharing.

“Many of the children won’t get much opportunity to do something a bit different like this”, she said. “It’s great that they do.

“It’s really good to see the girls and boys doing a task like this and also working together.

“The boxes will be going up on Sunday 26 February. Hopefully, some of the children will be able to go along with their parents and see the fruits of their hard work.”
